The Ladies of Horror

Fun with Ice and Thompson
by Jaime Johnesee

“Christ, Delaney, move!” Thompson pushed the boy out of the way as the ship hit another of the strange icy formations gathering in the sea. A chunk of ice the size of the child’s head fell to the ground where the boy had been standing.
“Stay away from the sides until we get clear of the ice field.” Gary Thompson admonished the child. As he spoke, he kept his eyes on the ice. Bergs were cropping up by the dozens and he began to struggle, they were coming so fast.
The ship lurched violently as a hunk of ice formed underneath it, causing it to list to the left.
Thompson heard the first mate scream and he began moving toward the man just as the ship’s hull raked across the ice.
He turned to the boy. “Just stay away from the sides and pray that we can make it through.”
More monoliths of ice were bursting forth from the sea, causing a wild rocking on the boat.
He sped toward his first mate, grabbing him with his left hand, pulling his right arm back and knocking out the man with a right cross.
“You shouldn’t have stolen the Sea Witch’s treasure!” He yanked the mate’s necklace off him, causing a nasty welt to rise. He took a moment and regarded the beautiful coral charm, crafted from gold and jewels, before chucking it overboard.
A green-tinged hand rose from the waves to catch it.
“You have your talisman back, leave us alone.” Though he bellowed it as loud as he could, he wasn’t sure if she’d heard him.
As terrifying cackle filled the air the ship lurched and more bergs appeared, screeching against the hull of the boat and filling passengers with dread.
“Death to thieves, no mercy granted.”
