The Ladies of Horror
Picture-Prompt Writing Challenge!

Heart of Stone
by Jaime Johnesee

I was built by you in 1134 AD. Every stone in my exterior is well-worn, weathered, and beaten. The winds and rains may have rounded my corners so that I looked soft, but—centuries later—I  am still standing strong and doing my job; protecting His worshippers and giving them a place to praise Him. My job hasn’t always been as easy as it is now.
I watched humankind craft The Magna Carta, heard tell of William Wallace and mourned the whispered news of his death. I saw Lutheran writings start to take hold within the community and watched as King Henry VIII severed ties with the Catholic Church.
I saw James I of England take the throne. Even saw the Catholic Relief Act pass and women won the right to enroll in Cambridge. Huzzah! I have stood through two world wars and many, many more battles and skirmishes of all kinds. My stones are chipped and scarred, but they’re nothing compared to the pain in my heart from watching you.
And I have watched you. I watched as you did everything you could to label yourselves and each other. Watched as an Us vs Them mentality began to take hold over the decades and it led to further separation of peoples, even as the world united online. Through it all, still you persist in your attempt to box everything into its labeled container.
It’s maddening. Skin tone, gender, religion and other personal beliefs, all reasons you humans give to blindly hate each other. Having something to hate makes everything easier, doesn’t it?
Never did for me; but, I’m made of stone. So, what do I know?
I look forward to the day you realize it’s only ever been about loving and caring for your fellow earthlings in whatever ways you can. I hope to still be standing when you realize you can all come together as one species, homo sapiens.
I hope you all learn to come together and accept each other both despite and for your differences. Don’t mind me, I’ll just be sitting here watching and waiting.
