Tears of Stone
by Stacey Turner

Olivia felt tears pool in her eyes and slip past her lashes to run down cold, pale cheeks. It wasn’t supposed to be this way. She stared up at the stone statue perched on Kyle’s headstone and wondered if the grief would ever lessen? Would she ever get past the forlorn ache in the center of her chest, the emptiness in her very being? It wasn’t supposed to be like this. She wasn’t supposed to have to navigate this long, lonely journey through the years without him.  She’d wanted to share her new found freedom with him, to spend eternity with the one she loved. She sighed and got to her feet, shaking out her cloak and glancing at the night sky. It grew lighter in the East and dawn had nearly broken. She must go.
She placed a hand on the Angel’s skirts and whispered softly to the stone. “I’m sorry, my love.” Walking quickly back towards her newest lodging she tried to push the past aside, to assuage the guilt that festered still, a black pall on everything she was and all that she did. How could she have known she’d lose control, that a newborn vampire wouldn’t be able to stop in time to change a mate, but would continue until the body was dead, the life extinguished? But Aiden had known. Known, yet not told, though he knew her plan. And he would pay. If it took her til the end of time, he would pay. This she vowed.
